Onam just went by and what’s Onam without Pookalam and Sadya, right? While Sadya was not possible this year, my friend Leetha shared her Pookalams with me every single day. Along with her and sitting at my home, I had a good feel of the festival. A little tradition that we have followed over years.
What I love about festivals is they bring us all together. I may not celebrate Onam but through my friends, I experience traditions and celebrations that I have never been exposed to.
So without any further ado, here are the Pookalams from Leetha’s house. One for each day up till the day of Onam.

Do you notice a pattern? I did on day 2 and loved the anticipation of counting the rings. Just so you know, the 9th and the 10th day are for creativity.
Do you celebrate Onam? What do you love most about the festival? If you don’t, read up this post to know about Onam.

I saw the pattern and each one is so beautifully done with love and devotion.

I never knew there is a 10 day run up to the main Onam day. I never had a Malayali friend who celebrated Onam. The addition of circles as a part of Pookalam creation looks beautiful.

I learnt this about a decade ago when I first got to know about Onam. It’s amazing how a festival is above religion and a state festival. ๐ Yes, the floral carpets are a beautiful work of art.

I didn’t know about the pattern as I always used to see the last day of arrangement of flowers which is different and creative. Something new I learnt today. Thanks Parul.
