The perfect gift #WordsMatter

‘Tis the season.

Of making memories with family and taking the time off for holidays. Spending some me-time with your favorite beverage and to unwrap the gifts. Taking a stay-cation and binge watching TV shows. And the list goes on.

It’s also the time to reflect on the year gone by and make resolutions for the new one. It’s wonderful how things change and become festive during this last quarter of the year. Don’t you think?

Growing up, our school would invite us for a mass on Christmas and we would all get cake after the prayers. While I have forgotten the carols we sang, the taste of the cake lingers on. It made an impression so strong that every December, I order cake and get ready to celebrate.

Gifts? Well, I plan a lot in my head but I am too lazy to step out. I am also someone who is not particular about gifts. A gift of love is love. For me, it’s about the intent. However, there is one thing that I would love to have.

If I could receive one gift, it would be a good health.

‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ is not just an old saying. It is the truth. As I look around, I see the need for each one of us to take care of ourselves. Mentally or physically – our body is after all a machine and needs care to keep going.

When I was in my twenties, this thought never came. Health was never a priority at that stage in life. A decade later, I have made health my priority. There is nothing I can do if I am not healthy.

A doctor once told me, ‘If you won’t respect you body, your body won’t.’ At that time I was going through a bad back condition and was advised bed rest. But after the doctor’s advise, when I started taking care of my back, I started feeling better. Even today, working out helps me keep back pain away. I know that I cannot take anything for granted.

So to me, a‘good health’ would be the perfect gift.

  1. Yes, the gift of good health would be wonderful. We really do tend to neglect our health in the 20’s and 30’s. I did that for sure and I am paying nicely now!

  2. I agree. We need to take care of our health and we shouldn’t wait for something to ‘happen’ before we start doing that. It should be part of our lifestyle along with enjoying the festive season.

  3. I know exactly what you mean, Parul. The year 2019 has taught me this one very essential thing about self-care—never to ignore one’s health. I’ve made it my top priority in life and now wish I can continue to do so in 2020. Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy 2020!

  5. That is a wonderful thing to wish for. Yes, we need to take care of ourselves. Health should be a priority. I’m finding it difficult to find time to exercise and feel so bad about it. Hope you are blessed with the gift of good health.

  6. So very rightly said Parul- good health is the key to our life and if we dont care for it, we would be in a whole world of pain. I too have felt the twinges of bad health in my 40s and now am on a serious track to improve my fitness. Hope your back is better and you are taking care XOXO

  7. I could completely relate with your thoughts here! Indeed in the 20s, we took everything for granted – our health and our stamina! Today, we are becoming aware of the need to take care! I wish 2020 brings you the Gift of Health and Adventures 😉
