What do you think of men who whistle?
Eve teasers. Right?
And the women who do that?
Adam teasers. If that is some phrase known to womankind.
You know throughout this challenge, equality has been the voice around. But if the whistles were for a cause and help achieve better health, what would you say of that?
Innovative. Period.
So, according to census 2011, 85.9 per cent households in rural Odisha do not have a toilet. The national average stands at 69.3 per cent which means this state is not in a good shape. Open defecation leads to diseases, unhygienic conditions and then add how unsafe it gets for women.
Women in this small district of Odisha took matters into their own hands and started patrolling the area. Armed with whistles, early in the morning and during the night, they blow whistles to alert people of their arrival. This encourages a dialogue and then the idea to build toilets so that one wouldn’t have to go to relieve themselves out in the open.
Of course, there are those who don’t listen and still prefer the fields. These women went the extra mile and found a solution. They started planting Tulsi, the Indian basil that is worshipped by many. Now one cannot defecate near Tulsi so they had to move out of the area. Yes, there are efforts to build toilets and as these villages are poor; tender applications, construction, contractors and top all that with approvals from authorities take time. Meanwhile, these women have found distant areas so that the unhygienic conditions do not impact the village.
These women are leading the change from the front and confronting those who are reluctant to change for good. You don’t need the right settings to do something positive and these women exemplify that idea.

Amazing way to bring about social change . One village in Maharashtra had women garlanding drunks with slippers and this stopped alcoholism while closer home , a brothel was shut down by the women in the neighbourhood by deflating the tyres of the clients and other methods that inconvenienced them.

Wow the women are ingenious … their ideas and methods to solve the problem is what we need today. Why can’t the govt hire them for betterment of the villages. It would be so amazing when these women have some more power in their hands.
