I am a dancer.
with a degree in business management, I joined the rat race for an year.
I left all that to choose a career in movement art.
Contemporary, Kalari Payattu, Ballet, Bharatnatyam, Chau and Kathak stole my heart.
I am studying and I also perform,
My students learn from me the art-form.
This dancing career happened by chance,
and I am glad it is helping me advance.
Confused when I was in life, I took up auditions,
I never knew this will be a great addition.
Dancing helps the introvert in me share,
this form of expression is like a breath of fresh air.
It began with trusting my voice,
and now it is shaping my career and about owning my choice.
Social stigma still surrounds this profession,
people need to change their perception.
When you take risks, you may fail
but just one win will help you sail.
Go ahead and set yourself free,
Do what you want and happiness you will see.
My name is Pooja Sabarinath and I am a dancer.

Sometimes, it is very hard to bucket an artist and I had a tough time thinking about what profession do I associate Pooja with. She is a movement artist and a teacher. She is a dancer and then she also enjoys the contemporary dance form. For the sake of this post and the fact that Pooja earns her scholarship from being a performer, I am taking the liberty to call her a dancer. I met Pooja (virtually) through a friend AJ and over the emails I exchanged with Pooja, I found her to be a simple and vivacious person.

Very inspiring words from Pooja. In some cultures like Asian and Indian cultures, a creative career is frowned upon. But good on you Pooja for doing what you love. ” about owning my choice.” Very profound phrase and I agree. If we love something enough and believe in ourselves, we can do it and we can go places with it. It starts with a choice, and with time, dedication and lots of hard work, we will be successful with our passion 🙂

It takes guts to follow what your heart desires but due to family and peer pressure, we decide to follow the rat race which is never ending. But when we see people like Pooja who never complains about her profession, always on her toes to be ready for any challenges , you appear to be a ray of hope to many individuals out there who want to follow what their heart desires…I wish her all the best..let your talent take you places …☺

Your dancer reminds me of my sister in law – an introvert and someone who made a living in a field related to journalism, but she also practiced what many in this country call “belly dancing”. Movement, I think, is her first love, but, like you, I find it hard to pigeonhole her.

Dancers intrigue me. They look so graceful and dreamy and artistic. It also speaks of perfection and long hours of hard work. Sadly enough taking it up as a career isn’t looked upon with much enthusiasm. Hopefully things will change one day. And I’m glad you’re doing your bit by writing about them.
